5 Powerful Lists for Your To-Do List

The to-do list. Love it or hate it, it’s a fantastic way of keeping yourself on the right track.

A to-do list is your step-by-step instruction for reaching your goals whether it’s making sure all the household chores are done or working toward a professional or personal goal.

While your to-do list keeps you focused, there are other lists that can help keep you motivated, thinking ahead and making the best use of your time.

Here are five lists to put on your to-do list today.

A wish list

A wish list can help you focus on what you want from life rather than slipping into the habit of thinking about all the things you don’t want.

Your wish list can contain anything you want. A handbag, a holiday, financial independence. Anything that appeals to you.

If you’ve read The Secret or anything about the law of attraction and an abundance mindset, you’ll know that what you think about you create. This is not new thinking. It’s cause and effect.

You can, and I highly recommend, take your wish list one step further by creating a vision board.

What will you put on your wish list?

A reading list

Learning is a never-ending process and one of the best and cheapest ways of learning new things is to read.

Reading is always on my to-do list because it’s my favorite way to unwind. For many years, I kept a list of the books I read as well as the ones I wanted to read. I dropped the habit during the parenthood years but it’s one I’ve recently started again.

You can keep a physical list in a notebook or journal or a digit one on the computer or smartphone. Use whichever method works best for you. And, make sure you tick them off as you go.

A shopping list

This can be as simple as a stockpile shopping list, as style oriented as a wardrobe list or as complicated as a renovation shopping list.

This list is a compilation of the things you need, including any relevant specifications. For example, I have a period cottage that I’m renovating so I keep an eye out for certain decorative features specific to the architectural period, together with measurements and sometimes pictures. You never know when you’re going to see the perfect piece at the perfect time.

It’s a practical way of ensuring you know exactly what you need so when you see it for a bargain price, you can grab it.

A bucket list

A bucket list is a bit like a wish list only bigger! Not the list, the things on the list.

The things on this list can be big scary challenges, like skydiving. Or, they can be big adventures, like cruising the Arctic on an icebreaker (yes, that’s on my bucket list).

Whatever is on your bucket list, make it big and make it personal. There’s no point in listing something you’re not passionate about. You need to really feel it.

Creating a bucket list helps you push your boundaries and makes you want to leave your comfort zone, even if it’s just for a short time.

A future goals list

Where do you want to be in 12 month’s time? What about 5 years? Ten years?

Putting a future goals list together encourages you to think about what’s important to you and what you want your life to look like at specific points in your future.

If you don’t add this list to your to-do list, it’s very easy to let another week, month or even year slip by without sitting down and setting some goals; profession and personal. Without a clear destination, your goal, how will you know which choices and decisions will serve you best? You won’t. So, make setting your future goals a priority.
