Time for the monthly goals review as well as the April budget update. April was another in a string of months that seemingly defy normal time and space. Once again, last month was over in a flash. My guess is it’s because I’m so busy. At the moment, multitasking is definitely not my friend. Something needs to change…
Plant Propagation – Mostly Fail
My primary goal for April was to spend some time propagating plants. Plants that will be ready to sell when spring visits us again in the southern hemisphere as well as plants that will be ready to sell in a few weeks. I managed to get some more strawberry runners potted up but nowhere near as many as I hoped and I didn’t get any longer term propagation projects started. So I definitely didn’t achieve what I’d hoped to in April.
Organisation – Mostly Pass
Decluttering my house is an ongoing project. During April, I signed up to a number of local Facebook ‘Buy/Sell/Swap’ Groups. Now, I just have to take photos of everything that needs to go (and is still in good condition) and post them on the various groups’ pages. This method of selling is completely new to me so I’m sure there’ll be a bit of a learning curve – like pricing things appropriately.
I’ve also been brutal with those items that are not really suitable for sale. No second thoughts… just into the bin. It’s kind of cathartic throwing away things that have been ‘in the way’ for so long. I can’t help but wonder if I’ll see benefits beyond a tidy home?
April Budget Update
We did really well with our spending in April. Our grocery costs were down another 20% and both my daughter and I believe we can do even better. During April our spending for all grocery related shopping (food, consumables, personal care and pets) was just under $11 per day. That’s for two adults and three cats. It’ll be interesting to see how low we can go in May.
Spending on fuel was way, way down on what we spent in March – less than half – because we were no longer driving around the countryside for hours on end as pre-driving test practice. I still drove more than I’d expected as I hadn’t factored in my mum’s week in hospital for a foot operation. That meant trips into town each day which work out at about 60 kms (38 miles) for a round trip.
There were no trips to the cinema in April, party because of the budget situation but also due to time constraints. I’m really looking forward to seeing Avengers: Age of Ulton (yes, I am a geek) so I’ll make sure that happens this month.
On the other side of the budget there are still issues. Business revenue is still way down and all my efforts are going toward getting it back to a reasonable level so I can transition toward other pursuits. It’s proving a constant challenge (as previously mentioned here) as one of the platforms I use (eBay) seems to be causing a lot of traffic related issues for small sellers. My other online store is with Etsy which is a steadily growing market. Not sure there’s much I can do about eBay traffic but I keep tweaking listings to see if it helps. It feels like ‘busy work’ though and that frustrates me no end.
Time will tell if these changes help. Meanwhile, I’ll be in a bit of a holding pattern in May. The last few months have been full of chaos and distraction so I’ll be looking for some time to step back, regroup and formulate a plan for the future. As the saying goes:
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
Do the months fly by for you, too?
Do you do much forward planning for your budget, business or life in general?
